Isaiah 37:33-36 - God's Mighty Power

PREFACE

During the reign of King Hezekiah, the King of Assyria commanded his military leaders conquer Jerusalem, as they had done many others. These leaders mocked the God of Israel (chapter 36). King Hezekiah prayed to the Almighty God. Then, Isaiah the prophet sent a message, a reply to King Hezekiah (chapter 37).

vv. 33-36
"Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:

'He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,' declares the Lord. 'I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!'

Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning--there were all the dead bodies!"

Isaiah 32:7-8; 33:1-2, 5-6 & 22, 34:1 & 8 and 35:8-10

"The scoundrel's methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just.
But the noble man makes noble plans, and by noble deeds he stands."

Isaiah 32:7-8

"Woe to you, O destroyer, you who have not been destroyed! Woe to you, O traitor, you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed.
O Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress."

Isaiah 33:1-2

"The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness.
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure."

"For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us."

Isaiah 33:5-6 & 22

"Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it!"

"For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion's cause."

Isaiah 34:1 & 8

"And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools [scoundrels] will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the Lord will return. They [believers] will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away."

Isaiah 24:12-16 & 23; 25:1 & 6-9 and Daniel 2:34-44 and John 4: 13-14

"The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces.
So it will be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleenings [fruit and grain left over from harvest] are left after the grape harvest.
They [the believers left behind after God judges Judah] raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the Lord's majesty.
Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.
From the ends of the earth we hear singing: 'Glory to the Righteous One.' But I [Isaiah] said, 'I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!'" ...

"The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed; for the Lord almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously."

Isaiah 24:12-16 & 23

"O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done marvelous things, things planned long ago." ...

"On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine-- the best of meats and the finest of wines.
On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.
In that day they will say, 'Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.'"

Isaiah 25:1 & 6-9 c. 700BC

"While you [Nebuchadnezzar] were watching [in a dream], a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were broken to pieces at the same time and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.
"This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king. You, O king, are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; in your hands he has placed mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds of the air. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.
"After you, another kingdom will rise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth. Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron--for iron breaks and smashes everything--and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
"In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever."

Daniel 2:34-44 c. 500BC

"Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water [of the earth] will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"

John 4:13-14 c. 30AD
